Amazon Web Services: When the OG Cloud Couldn’t Update a Screen

Situation

From the beginning, each AWS service team designed and coded its own UI. That autonomy helped AWS ship fast — but it also produced a wide range of mediocre or outright bad interfaces across services that were supposed to work together. The main console was a sea of service icons, not a dashboard or portal. The service teams themselves hated spending time coding front ends. It wasn’t what they cared about, and it showed.

The assumption was that most AWS users accessed services through the command line or IDE, making the web console a secondary concern. Data told a different story. The majority of users came in through the web. The fragmented, inconsistent console wasn’t a cosmetic problem — it was the primary experience for most customers. Countless complaints. And no one had been accountable for it holistically.

Transformation

Phillip and team led the redesign of over 30 AWS products — including S3 and Elastic Beanstalk — and launched the first new AWS UI designs in more than four years. He turned the initial UI library into a foundation that became Cloudscape, AWS’s public design system. That gave service teams shared infrastructure to deliver quality interfaces without building from scratch. The result: a more orchestrated experience designed for cloud developer workflows, built to scale as AWS grew from 45 to over 200 services.
